Artist Spotlight: J. Cole

North Carolina native J. Cole (Born Jermaine Cole) was the first artist signed to Jay-Z's Roc Nation label and is Jay-Z's newest protege. Raised by his mother in his hometown of Fayetville, J. Cole first fell in love with rapping when he was 12. He became a fan of hip hop artists such as 2pac, Nas, and Outkast. At the age of 15 he recieved a beat machine from his mother. He asked for a beat machine to start producing his own music since he had multiple notebooks filled with rhymes but no beats to put them to. He attended college on an academic scholarship at St. John's University so that he can be in New York City and promote his music there. His mixtape hosted by DJ On Point, "The Come Up" which features music he recorded while in college, is now available.
